The purpose of the ACCORD Eye Study is to investigate
the effects of the ACCORD interventions (blood sugar control, blood
pressure control, and blood lipids control) on eye disease (retinopathy)
in ACCORD participants, all of whom have diabetes. Retinopathy
associated with diabetes is the leading cause of acquired blindness
in adults in the US. Participants in the ACCORD Eye Study will
have fundus (part of the retina, or back of the eye) photographs
taken within four months of randomization and again four years later.
The primary outcome variable of the ACCORD
Eye Study is the combined outcome of progression of diabetic
retinopathy of at least 3 stages
on the ETDRS scale, photocoagulation (laser therapy for diabetic
eye disease), or vitrectomy (a type of surgery for diabetic
eye disease).
There will be 4065 participants recruited
to the study at baseline and we will examine the effects of blood
sugar control,
lipid control, and blood pressure control on the primary outcome.
If this study is positive, the studied treatments could be
used more widely to help prevent diabetes-related blindness.
